Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria can cause serious infections, especially when the immune system is low. The use of antibiotics is often the choice in treating infections, but bacterial resistance to antibiotics is increasing. Therefore, the search for alternative antibacterials from natural sources is important. One potential plant is the kenikir leaf (Cosmos caudatus). This study aims to explore the potential of kenikir leaf water extract as an antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, considering its relevance to community practice. Experimental research assesses the effectiveness of water extract of kenikir leaves in inhibiting Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria using a well diffusion test. The research was conducted at the Palembang Health Laboratory Center. Water extract of kenikir leaves was obtained from the extraction process. The water extract of kenikir leaves was then made into four concentration variations, namely 12.5%, 25%, 50%, and 100%. The positive control used was cefixime and the negative control used distilled water. The parameters measured for the diffusion test were the inhibition zone (mm), each treatment consisted of three replications (triplicate). The data are presented in tabular form. This study shows that the water extract of kenikir leaves does not produce an inhibition zone at various concentrations against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria, inhibition zone size of 0 cm. The water extract of kenikir leaves did not produce an inhibition zone at various concentrations tested. Although kenikir leaves contain bioactive compounds that have antibacterial potential, the lack of activity in this study is thought to be due to the limitations of water solvents in extracting active compounds optimally and the low concentration of dissolved bioactive compounds.
