Abstract

Background: Schizophrenia is a serious psychiatric disorder characterized by impairments in thought processes, perception, and emotional responses significantly impacting social functioning. Evaluating social functioning is essential for determining the severity of symptoms and predicting outcomes in schizophrenia patients. This study aims to describe the social functioning of patients with schizophrenia treated at the Outpatient Polyclinic of Ernaldi Bahar Hospital, focusing on participation in socially useful activities, personal and social relationships, self-care, and disruptive or aggressive behavior. Methods: This descriptive observational study used consecutive sampling to collect data through interviews with 109 schizophrenia patients. The Personal and Social Performance Scale (PSP) was employed alongside medical record observations. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. Results: The findings revealed that 62.4% of respondents experienced social functioning disabilities to varying degrees. Absent-to-mild difficulties were noted in participation in socially useful activities (53.2%; 22%), personal and social relationships (64.2%; 25.7%), and self-care (40.4%; 39.4%). Additionally, absent-to-manifested difficulties were observed in disruptive and aggressive behavior (56%; 39.4%). The study further examined social functioning variations based on age, gender, education, marital status, schizophrenia subtype, antipsychotic medication, and treatment duration. Conclusion: The majority of patients with schizophrenia experience varying degrees of disability in social functioning, with a degree of absent-to-mild difficulties in the domain of participation in socially useful activities, personal and social relationships, and self care. Most patients also show absent-to-manifested difficulties in the domain of disruptive and aggressive behavior.
