Abstract

Background: Breast cancer is a type of cancer with a high prevalence in Indonesia. The quality of life of breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy can be influenced by many factors, which require assessment using instruments such as the EORTC QLQ-C30 (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core-30). Methods: This study used a descriptive observational method with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 106 breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at RS Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Data were collected through interviews using the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire. Results: The distribution of demographic characteristics showed that the majority of patients were adult women (88,68%), most were married (99,06%), and 79,25% had an income below the UMR of Palembang City. The majority of patients had completed education up to elementary school (33,96%), and 73,58% were not working. Based on the functional scale, the average quality of life score was 78,6 ± 5,85, with the highest score in emotional function (84,98 ± 9,27) and the lowest in role function (72,33 ± 18,77). On the symptom scale, the average score was 57,88 ± 13,91, with constipation as the highest symptom (74,75 ± 19,14) and insomnia and decreased appetite as the lowest symptoms (37,81 ± 11,90). Meanwhile, the average score for general health status was 77,56 ± 11,92. Conclusion: The quality of life of breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, based on the EORTC QLQ-C30 results, indicates that the functional scale is better than the symptom scale and general health status. Routine and comprehensive quality of life assessments are essential to know the impact of treatment and improving clinical management of patients.
