Abstract
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder characterized by the retrograde flow of gastric contents into the esophagus, causing bothersome symptoms and complications. GERD is a significant worldwide health issue, with increasing prevalence linked to lifestyle changes and unhealthy habits. Although no official prevalence data exists for Indonesia, several studies suggest a rise in GERD cases caused by unhealthy lifestyle and habits. Elevated Body Mass Index (BMI) has been identified as a key risk factor for GERD in various studies. The objectives of the research is to analyze the association between BMI and the incidence of GERD among gastroclinic visits at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital in Palembang. This is an observational analytic descriptive study using a cross-sectional design. There were 153 samples that met the eligibility requirements. A random sampling method was used with the GERD-Q instrument. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistic V27 in univariate, bivariate (chi-square test), and multivariate analysis (regression logistic enter method). The majority of GERD patients were aged 36—65 years (46.7%), male (46.2%), and elevated BMI (65.9%). The results of this research showed no significant association among age and sex in the incidence of GERD. However, BMI had a substantial connection with GERD incidence (p=0.003), thus being the most significant variable in this research (p=0.012). In conclusion, BMI plays a significant role in GERD development, emphasizing its importance in disease prevention and management. However, age and sex's roles remain less substantial, though advanced age and male sex may predispose individuals to GERD. Keywords : Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, Body Mass Index, GERD-Q
