Abstract

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. Previous studies have shown that nearly all pathogens have developed resistance to antibiotics due to irrasional antibiotic use. This study aims to determine the distribution of bacterial types and antibiotic sensitivity in pneumonia patients in the ICU of RSMH Palembang in 2023. This descriptive study used a cross-sectional study design. Data were obtained from the medical records of pneumonia patients treated in the ICU of RSMH Palembang in 2023 and sputum culture results were taken from the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory. All pneumonia patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected as research subjects using total sampling. There were 38 samples of pneumonia patients treated in the ICU of RSMH Palembang in 2023. Most were aged 56 – 65 years (34,2%) and were predominantly male (71,1%). The median length of ICU stay was 5 (1 – 40) days with 68,2% discharged alive. Acinetobacter baumannii (44,7%) was the most frequently identified bacteria, followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (13,2%). The most identified gram-positive bacteria was Staphylococcus aures (7,9%). A. baumannii was most sensitive to tigecycline (70,6%), while P. aeruginosa showed sensitivity to amikacin, ciprofloxacin, meropenem, and piperacillin-tazobactam (60%). Most A. baumanni and P. aeruginosa were MDR, while E. coli and K. pneumoniae were entirely MDR. Acinetobacter baumannii was the most common bacteria identified in pneumonia patients in the ICU of RSMH Palembang in 2023 that was most sensitive to tigecycline. Keywords.
