Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious multisystemic disease cause by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). The bacteria Mtb can invade the children lungs which results in pulmonary TB. Not all pulmonary TB in children is bacteriologically confirmed. This study aims to determine the prevalence and distribution of characteristics of bacteriologically confirmed pediatric pulmonary TB patients at Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang. Descriptive cross sectional study with total sampling. Data were taken from medical records of pediatric patients aged 0-<18 years with bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB through Molecular Rapid Test (TCM) examination at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang for the period January 2021-July 2024. Data were analyzed univariately. A total of 32 patients (10.2%) out of 314 pediatric pulmonary TB patients were bacteriologically confirmed. The majority of patients were children aged 10-<15 years, 11 patients (34.4%), female 22 patients (68.7%), malnourished 14 patients (43.8%), long cough symptoms 27 patients (84.4%), no comorbid diseases 18 patients (56.3%), There was history of BCG immunization in 16 patients (61.5%), TB contact in 16 patients (57.1%), positive tuberculin test result in 22 patients (68.7%), very low TCM examination in 11 patients (34.4%), and thoracic photo image of pleural effusion in 14 patients (43.8%). The prevalence of bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB in pediatric patients at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang was 32 patients (10.2%). The majority were children aged 10-<15 years, female, malnourished, showing long cough symptoms, no comorbid diseases, history of BCG immunization, TB contact, with positive tuberculin test, very low TCM examination, and thoracic photo image of pleural effusion.
