Abstract

One of the global health problems that is still neglected, especially in tropical and sub-tropical countries such as Indonesia, is soil-transmitted helminths (STH) infection. Scavengers who come into contact with the soil while working are a group that is vulnerable to STH contamination of the fingernails. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the level of personal hygiene and STH contamination of the fingernails of waste pickers at Sukawinatan landfill Palembang. This study was an observational analytical study with a cross sectional design. The subjects were 40 waste pickers in Sukawinatan landfill Palembang who were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria using consecutive sampling procedure. Data were collected through interviews and direct observation of the respondent’s fingernails using a questionnaire and microscopic examination of fingernail samples in the laboratory using the 10% KOH sedimentation method. The results obtained were then analysed with Fisher's Exact test .The results showed 2.5% of positive samples were contaminated with STH eggs (1 subject) with the type of STH egg found 100% were Ascaris lumbricoides. Most of the respondent had poor hand nail hygiene (67.5%) and good hand washing habits after work (62.5%). Statistical tests showed no significant relationship between personal hygiene which includes fingernail hygiene (p>0.05) and hand washing habits after work (p>0.05) with STH egg contamination in the fingernails of scavengers of Sukawinatan landfill Palembang. STH egg contamination on the fingernails of scavengers of Sukawinatan landfill Palembang was not influenced by fingernail hygiene and hand washing habits after work/contact with soil.
