Abstract
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a common digestive disorder that affects quality of life, including sleep quality. GERD symptoms, especially those occurring at night, can lead to significant sleep disturbances, such as insomnia, frequent nighttime awakenings, and poor sleep quality. This condition can negatively impact daily life, particularly for students who bear a heavy academic workload. This study aims to determine the relationship between suspected GERD and sleep quality among medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. This study utilized a cross-sectional design with a quantitative approach. The study population consisted of students from the 2021 cohort of the medical education program at the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. Data were collected through two main instruments, namely the GERD-Q questionnaire to assess GERD symptoms and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to evaluate sleep quality. Statistical analysis was performed to determine the relationship between GERD and sleep quality. The results of this study indicate a significant relationship between suspected GERD and poor sleep quality. Most respondents experiencing GERD symptoms also showed higher PSQI scores, indicating poorer sleep quality. This confirms that nighttime reflux symptoms contribute to a decrease in sleep quality. There is a significant relationship between suspected GERD and poor sleep quality among medical students. This study highlights the importance of managing GERD symptoms to improve sleep quality, especially for students with high academic demands. Self-intervention in managing GERD can enhance overall quality of life.
