Abstract

Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) is a congenital disorder of the large intestine resulting from missing nerve cells in the colon, leading to bowel obstruction. Despite surgical interventions, post-operative challenges, including constipation, incontinence, and emotional stress, can impact patients' quality of life. This study aims to evaluate the quality of life in school-aged HSCR patients post-surgery using the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) Generic Core at RSUP Mohammad Hoesin, Palembang. This descriptive cross-sectional study involved 21 school-aged children with HSCR who underwent surgical procedures from 2019 to 2022. Data were collected through interviews with the patients' parents using the PedsQL Generic Core questionnaire, assessing four domains: physical, emotional, social, and school functioning. The results were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The overall quality of life score for post-operative HSCR patients was 88.5, categorized as good. Emotional functioning had the highest score (100), followed by sosial (95), physical (81,25), and school functioning (80). Male patients showed slightly lower scores than females, and older children (13-18 years) had higher scores, indicating better adaptation with age.The study indicates a generally positive quality of life for HSCR patients post-surgery, though school functioning is notably lower, suggesting a need for targeted support in educational settings. Multidisciplinary follow-up is essential to address the physical, emotional, and social challenges HSCR patients may face to optimize their quality of life.
