Abstract
Infectious diseases are a major health problem in Indonesia, with antibiotics being the primary choice for treatment. However, inappropriate antibiotic use can lead to resistance, increasing morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the Defined Daily Dose (DDD) method to standardize and measure antibiotic use for effective monitoring. This study was conducted at the Merdeka Palembang Health Center to measure and monitor the use of commonly prescribed antibiotics effectively. This research is a retrospective descriptive study using secondary data from pharmaceutical data at the Merdeka Palembang Health Center in 2023, fulfilling inclusion criteria for the January–December period. Data collection was done using total sampling. All data were processed in Excel and presented in tables and charts. DDD was calculated for four main types of antibiotics used: amoxicillin, doxycycline, clindamycin, and ciprofloxacin. In 2023, it was found that the residents of the Merdeka Palembang Health Center used amoxicillin 500 mg with a total of 45,232 drugs and 4,371 prescriptions, doxycycline 100 mg with a total of 220 drugs and 17 prescriptions, clindamycin 300 mg with a total of 239 drugs and 26 prescriptions, and ciprofloxacin 500 mg with a total of 1,334 drugs and 197 prescriptions. In 2023, at the Merdeka Palembang Health Center, the DDD value of amoxicillin was 1.92 DDD/1000/day, doxycycline was 0.023 DDD/1000/day, clindamycin was 0.009 DDD/1000/day, and ciprofloxacin was 0.13 DDD/1000/day. Amoxicillin was the most widely used drug at the Merdeka Palembang Health Center during the January to December 2023 period. In certain periods, there was no use of doxycycline, clindamycin, and ciprofloxacin.
