Abstract

Background. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) manifests in hand weakness, decreased grip strength, pain, tingling, and changes in temperature regulation in the hands and wrists due to compression of the medianus nerve in the carpal tunnel. The predisposing factor includes gender, where women have smaller hand anthropometric than men, thus, increase the risk of CTS. Therefore, this study aims to obtain data on sociodemographic characteristics, hand anthropometric profiles, and an overview of nerve conduction studies in CTS patients at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital. Methods. This study was a descriptive research using secondary data in the form of medical records and primary data in the form of hand anthropometric measurements in patients diagnosed with CTS. Results. The majority of the patients was female (91.1%); housewives (60%); age group 46 - 65 years old (64.5%) with an average age of 53 ± 10.5 years; overweight BMI (46.7%); and right hand was found more commonly than left hand (46,7%). Based on the data, anthropometry of men's hands was larger than that of women. The ENMG results obtained were CMAP with an average amplitude of 6.457 μV, distal latency of 5.331 ms, and KHS of 55.473 m/s. SNAP test result from ENMG consisted of average amplitude of 20.092 μV, distal latency of 3.767 ms, and KHS of 43.408 m/s. Conclusion. CTS patients were dominated by women, aged 46-65 years, overweight, and worked as housewives. Male hand anthropometry was larger than that of female. The results of sensory nerve conduction studies in ENMG were obtained to be more abnormal than that of the motor nerve conduction studies, with mild CTS being the most common. Keywords: CTS, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, sociodemography characteristics, hand anthropometric profile, nerve conduction study, CTS severity.
