Abstract

Often thought of as an adult disease, diabetes is now more prevalent in adolescents. Blood sugar levels that are close to the threshold but not high enough to be classified as diabetes are called prediabetes. The condition of prediabetes is influenced by several risk factors. This study aims to determine the factors associated with the incidence of prediabetes in medical students at Sriwijaya University class of 2024. This research is observational analytic with cross-sectional study design. Sampling using simple random sampling method. Data collection was carried out primary and then analyzed univariate and bivariate using SPSS. The results of univariate analysis showed that the distribution of prediabetes was 31.8%, did not have a family history of DM (68.2%), normal BMI (36.4%), increased fat percentage (42.4%), good diet (69.7%), high-fat food intake in the rare category (74.2%), salty foods in the rare category 57.6%), sweet foods in the rare category (66.7%), sweet drinks in the rare category (62.1%), light physical activity (67.7%), and heavy sedentary lifestyle (95.5%). Bivariate analysis showed a significant relationship between prediabetes with BMI (p=0.010, OR=4,379) and fat percentage (p=0.006, OR=4,429), but there was no relationship with family history (p=0.699), diet (p=0.834), high-fat foods (p=0.336), salty foods (p=0.627), sweet foods (p=0.542), sweet drinks (p=0.733), physical activity (p=0.714) and sedentary lifestyle (p=0.236). This study found an association between prediabetes with BMI and fat percentage, but no association with family history, diet, intake of high-fat foods, salty foods, sweet foods, sweet drinks, physical activity and sedentary lifestyle.
