Abstract
Protein is one of the nutrients that play an important role in supporting physical growth and brain development in children. Lack of protein intake in the growth period can inhibit bone growth and cause stunting. In children aged 12-23 months, complementary feeding is a crucial stage in meeting nutritional needs, including protein. Therefore, this study aims to assess the protein adequacy of complementary feeding practices and the contribution of protein sources in meeting children's daily protein needs. This study was a descriptive study, involving 95 children aged 12–23 months in the working area of Puskesmas 1 Ulu, Palembang City. The study used primary data which was collected through anthropometric examination of children, as well as interviews in the form of 1×24 hour food recall to parents or guardians of the children. The collected data were analyzed using the nutrisurvey program, Microsoft Office Excel formulas, and finally analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 27 edition. Male and female respondents were almost equal, with 48 boys (50.5%) and 47 girls (49.5%). The majority of children had good nutritional status (72.6%) and a normal height stature (87.4%). Most of the children, 77 children (81.1%) had adequate levels of protein. The dominant protein children in this study population consumed was from animal protein sources. Protein intake from complementary foods in most children has reached the recommended level of protein requirements calculated based on their individual needs. The main sources of protein most consumed came from animal dishes, such as formula milk, chicken eggs, chicken meat, and fish.
