Abstract

Scoliosis is a spinal curvature disorder that can be experienced by all ages and is associated with decreased quality of life. Currently, there is little data on the prevalence of adult scoliosis in young adults both in Indonesia and in the world. Diagnosis of scoliosis is costly and carries risks due to radiation exposure. With the advancement of technology, smartphone applications can detect the risk of scoliosis accurately, easily, and cheaply. This study is a descriptive observational study with a cross sectional design. The data used were primary data obtained through observation of gender, interviews regarding the history of sco liosis in the nuclear family, and direct measurement using the Adam's forward bend test (AFBT) technique and the Bubble Level, Spirit Level applications on Samsung Galaxy A52s 5G smartphone on Medical students in the class of 2021 at Sriwijaya University who met the inclusion criteria and did not fall into the exclusion criteria. Data was processed using SPSS version 30. The mean angle of trunk rotation (ATR) values obtained by 2 different examiners on 238 students using the AFBT technique and smartphone application were 4.005˚ and 3.580˚. The prevalence ratio of the risk of adult scoliosis between female and male students was 1.33:1. There were only 6 students who had a history of scoliosis in their nuclear family. The prevalence of students at risk of adult scoliosis was 33.6% (cut off ATR ≥5˚) or 14.7% (cut off ATR ≥7˚). The prevalence of Medical students in the class of 2021 at Sriwijaya University who are at risk of adult scoliosis was 33.6% (cut off ATR ≥5˚) or 14.7% (cut off ATR ≥7˚).
