Abstract

Mitral valve diseases, such as stenosis mitral and regurgitation, are major causes of cardiac dysfunction that significantly affect patients’ quality of life. Data on patient characteristics with mitral valve disorders in Indonesia remain limited. This study aims to describe the profile of patients undergoing mitral valve surgery at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang from July 2023 to July 2024. This study employed a descriptive design using secondary data from the medical records of patients who underwent mitral valve surgery. Variables analyzed included type of disorder, age, gender, length of hospital stay, and mortality rate. Data were analyzed descriptively using frequency distribution. A total of 42 patients were analyzed, equally divided between mitral stenosis (50%) and mitral regurgitation (50%). The majority of patients were under 45 years old (69%), with females dominating (61.9%). Most patients had a hospital stay of less than 11 days (57.1%). The overall mortality rate was 16.7%, higher in mitral stenosis patients (28.6%) compared to mitral regurgitation (4.8%). Mitral valve disorders are more commonly found in younger patients, with females dominating. The higher mortality rate in mitral stenosis compared to mitral regurgitation highlights the need for early detection and more comprehensive management. This study is expected to serve as a foundation for developing treatment strategies and health policies related to mitral valve diseases in Indonesia.
