Abstract
Background. Osteoporosis is a bone disorder characterized by low bone mass and increased risk of fractures, particularly in developing countries. In Indonesia, the prevalence reaches 19.7%, with vitamin D deficiency in Asia estimated at 60-80%, especially among osteoporosis patients. Vitamin D plays a critical role in maintaining calcium balance in the body and, when deficient, may accelerate bone resorption. This study aims to analyze the factors affecting 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in osteoporosis patients at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Methods. This study employs an analytical method with a cross-sectional study design. Researchers collected secondary data from medical records and primary data through interviews with osteoporosis patients. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Results. The study sample consisted of 63 respondents who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Females constituted the highest proportion in the insufficiency category, accounting for 50%, while males were predominant in the normal category, with 53.3%. Respondents aged over 65 years had the largest proportion in the insufficiency category (51.4%), whereas those aged 55–65 years were most prevalent in the deficiency category (42.3%). Regarding smoking habits, no active smokers were identified. Passive smokers accounted for 45.5% in the insufficiency category, while non-smokers comprised 46.7% in the same category. In terms of Body Mass Index (BMI), obesity was most prevalent in the insufficiency category (58.3%), followed by overweight (41.1%), normal BMI (45%), and underweight, which was equally distributed between the deficiency and insufficiency categories (50%). Concerning sun exposure, respondents exposed to sunlight less than three times per week had the highest prevalence in the insufficiency category (50%), while those with exposure three or more times per week were most prevalent in the normal category (42.1%). With respect to occupation, individuals working indoors were most prevalent in the insufficiency category (48.3%), whereas those working outdoors were evenly distributed between the deficiency and normal categories (40%). Lastly, respondents who used head coverings, such as hats or caps, were most prevalent in the insufficiency category (54.2%), while those who did not use head coverings were predominant in the normal category (53.3%). Conclusion. There is a relationship between gender and the use of body protection with 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in osteoporosis patients at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital, Palembang.
