Abstract

Background: Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) is a congenital disorder due to the absence of colon ganglion cells, resulting in impaired bowel motility. The limited epidemiological data and information related to HSCR in Indonesia indirectly impacts the lack of awareness of HSCR. This has led to delayed diagnosis, improper management and high rates of complications and mortality associated with HSCR. Therefore, this study aims to bridge the information gap by providing data of incidence and clinicopathological characteristics of HSCR at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang with the goal of contributing to improving early diagnosis and management of HSCR. Methods: A descriptive study with cross-sectional approach was conducted on new cases of HSCR patients at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang for the period 2019-2023. Data were collected from medical records and processed and analyzed with IBM SPSS version 27. Results: The percentage of incidence of HSCR showed a fluctuating pattern with peaks in 2020 (2.2%) in the pediatric patient population and in 2022 (8.9%) in the live birth population. Most patients were diagnosed at <1 month of age (40.0%), were male (76.7%), had a chief complaint of abdominal distension (41.1%), were managed with the Soave procedure (48.9%), and had S-HSCR (74.4%). Conclusion: This study revealed a fluctuating pattern of HSCR incidence with the majority of patients diagnosed at <1 month of age, male, had a chief complaint of abdominal distension, were managed using the Soave procedure, and had type S-HSCR. These findings emphasize the importance of early detection and appropriate management to reduce complication and mortality, as well as to increase clinical awareness of HSCR.
