Abstract

Dysphagia is a swallowing difficulty associated with the sensorimotor system, commonly occurring as a life-threatening symptom of neurological disorders. A key diagnostic tool for evaluating dysphagia is the Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES). This study aims to assess FEES findings in patients with oropharyngeal phase dysphagia caused by neurological disorders at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang during 2023–2024. Aspects analyzed include age, gender, neurological causes, and FEES findings (residue, leakage, aspiration, penetration) across six food consistencies. This descriptive study utilized secondary data from medical records of patients with oropharyngeal phase dysphagia due to neurological disorders who met inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data analysis was conducted using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) program, employing total sampling techniques. A total of 94 patients met the study criteria, with 56 males (59.6%). The majority were aged 53–65 years (34 patients, 36,2%). Cerebrovascular disease (CVD) was the most common neurological cause, found in 46 patients (48,9%). FEES findings revealed residue, leakage, aspiration, and penetration, with filtered porridge consistency being the most frequently associated. This study's results align with previous research on dysphagia and FEES, differing in the predominance of findings related to filtered porridge consistency.
