Abstract

Background: Incorrect use of facial skincare products can cause acne in adolescents (juvenile acne). The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between the usage of facial skincare and the incidence of juvenile acne. Methods: This cross-sectional analytical observational study was conducted in July - September 2024. Respondents were students of SMA Negeri 1 Palembang and Indralaya selected with a consecutive sampling technique. Data were collected using a questionnaire and physical examination, then processed with SPSS 27 statistical program. Results: The most frequently skincare types used in this study were cleanser (88.5%), sunscreen (76%), moisturizer (63.5%), mask (53%), serum (41%), and toner (39%). The incidence of juvenile acne was 65% with mild (63.8%), moderate (34.6%), and severe (1.5%) severity. Respondents who were using skincare suffered significantly higher rates of juvenile acne (p=0.041), which included the use of moisturizers (p<0.001), sunscreens (p=0.001), masks (p=0.008), and toners (p=0.043). Frequency of usage and intensity of skincare brand changes, as well as the use of over the counter skincare significantly increased the incidence of juvenile acne (p<0.001; p=0.005; p=0.022; p<0.001). The frequency of usage of cleanser (p=0.133; p=0.133) and serum (p=0.489; p=0.647) did not showed significant association with the incidence of juvenile acne. Conclusion: There is an relationship between use of facial skincare and the incidence of juvenile acne. Further multicenter studies are necessary to evaluate the type and ingredients of skincare to the incidence of juvenile acne. Keywords: Skincare usage, juvenile acne
