Abstract

The main feed for ruminant cattles was forage, but the availability of forage feed was decreasing due to the narrowing of agricultural land that can produce forage feed. A common source of protein was reinforcing feed (concentrate), but to obtain concentrates with a high enough protein content was difficult. In addition, the cost factor that was quite expensive was often a limitation of the use of concentrates, therefore the additional ingredients of protein and energy were needed. One way to overcome these problems was by adding protein and energy sources. This study aimed to study gas production, gas pressure and the concentration of methane gas in grain feed in vitro. This research was conducted in October 2018 at the Animal Nutrition Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Animal Husbandry and Technology, Animal Husbandry Study Program, Sriwijaya University Indralaya. It used the experimental method with 3 treatments and each treatment was repeated 5 times: P0 (Corn) P1 (Sorghum) P2 (Rice Bran). The parameters observed were gas production, gas pressure and the concentration of methane gas in vitro. Based on the results of this study it can be concluded that the profile of the rate of gas production and gas pressure between the samples is relatively the same. However, the highest concentration of methane gas was found in the sorghum sample.
