Abstract
Children with Down syndrome face various challenges that affect their quality of life, such as developmental delays and congenital comorbidities. The role of parents, particularly their motivation in supporting their child's therapy, is crucial to improving their child's well-being. This study aims to analyze the relationship between parental motivation and the quality of life of children with Down syndrome at the POTADS Foundation, highlighting the importance of the role of parents as key to the success of sustainable interventions. This study was a cross-sectional analytic observational study in a population of parents at the POTADS Foundation (Association of Parents of Children with Down Syndrome). The subjects used were 127 parents from different backgrounds. The data processed is primary data from filling out questionnaires by parents, the questionnaire used is the Parents Motivation Inventory (PMI) which totals 25 items and the General Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) Parents Reported 4.0 to measure each parent's motivation and child's quality of life. Of the 127 subjects, 63 (49.6%) parents had high motivation and 64 (50.4%) parents had low motivation. Children's quality of life was in the range of 23−99 with a mean of 63.69 (±16.56). The number of children with high quality of life 63 (49.6%) was almost the same as children with low quality of life 64 (50.4%). The results of the Chi-Square test obtained a p value indicating a significant relationship between parental motivation and the quality of life of children with Down syndrome at the POTADS Indonesia Foundation (p=0.041; OR 2.080 (95% CI=1.025−4.219)). However, there was no significant relationship between all characteristics of children and parents with the quality of life of children with Down syndrome.
