Abstract
Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by increased bone fragility and an elevated risk of fractures. Bisphosphonates, which can inhibit bone resorption and increase BMD, are the first choice for the pharmacological management of osteoporosis. One of the bisphosphonates given by injection is zoledronic acid. Side effects that may arise from administering zoledronic acid include decreased calcium levels. Given this, it is necessary to study the decrease in calcium levels in patients after receiving zoledronic acid injections. This research used an analytical observational method, a cross-sectional design, and a purposive sampling technique with a minimum sample of 35. It was done through interviews and continued observation of calcium levels in the patient's medical records. The average calcium level before the injection was 9,04 mg/dL, and the average calcium level after the injection was 8,69 mg/dL. The results of this study indicate a significant decrease in calcium levels before and after the zoledronic acid injection, with a p=0,00 obtained from the paired t-test. There was a significant decrease in calcium levels after the zoledronic acid injection in osteoporosis patients at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital, Palembang.
