Abstract

This study aims to analyze the construction of identity and social existence of crossdressing cosplayers on social media, specifically Instagram. Using social identity theory as an analytical framework, the study identifies how cosplayers form and present their identities within the context of social media, as well as how interactions within online and offline communities influence their existence. This research employs a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews conducted with four key informants actively engaged in crossdressing cosplay activities. The findings reveal that Instagram plays a significant role in the formation of cosplayers' social identities. The informants tend to use pseudonyms in cosplay, which signifies a separation between their personal identity and their identity within the cosplay community. However, there are differences in the understanding and acceptance of identity among cosplayers from different communities, particularly regarding gender perceptions during crossdressing. This study enriches the understanding of how social media plays a role in shaping identity, existence, and the potential social implications of acceptance of this phenomenon in Palembang society.
