Abstract

This study aims to analyze the characteristics of rainfall in Kalimantan Island during the El-Niño and Positive IOD phases using the composite method. The data used are reanalysis data from ERA5 for the period 1985–2023. The analysis was conducted using Python within the Jupyter Notebook software to produce visualizations of rainfall patterns across four seasons (DJF, MAM, JJA, and SON). The study was carried out in the Physics Education Laboratory at Sriwijaya University. This research employed a quantitative approach using secondary data. The rainfall data utilized in this study were satellite-based total rainfall data sourced from the Climate Data Store website. Specifically, the data comprised monthly total rainfall from ERA5 for Kalimantan Island over a 38-year period (1985–2023). The results of the study indicate that El-Niño tends to reduce rainfall intensity across Kalimantan, particularly during the JJA season. Meanwhile, Positive IOD amplifies drought patterns in the southern and central regions of Kalimantan. The combined impact of El-Niño and Positive IOD significantly decreases rainfall, especially during the dry season. This study provides valuable insights for mitigating hydrometeorological risks in Kalimantan.
