Abstract

This study aims to design and develop a strain gauge-based dynamometer as a tool for measuring cutting forces in turning processes. The dynamometer is designed using a cantilever concept equipped with a strain gauge as the primary sensor to detect strain caused by cutting forces. The strain data is converted into an electrical signal using an amplifier, then processed by an Arduino UNO microcontroller before being visualized as a digital signal through computer software. Calibration is conducted by loading the cantilever with incremental masses from 0 kg to 30 kg, and then unloading from 30 kg back to 0 kg to determine the conversion factor from voltage to force in Newtons. The calibration demonstrates good linearity, proving that the device is sensitive and accurate in detecting changes in cutting forces. The dynamometer was tested on a conventional lathe machine to analyze the relationship between machining parameters such as feed rate, depth of cut, and spindle speed on cutting force. The test results indicate that an increase in feed rate and depth of cut leads to higher cutting forces, while an increase in spindle speed tends to decrease cutting forces. The graphical test results show patterns consistent with theory and previous research, demonstrating the reliability of the device. With low production costs, this dynamometer provides an economical solution for direct measurement of cutting forces, contributing significantly to process optimization in machining and supporting further research in the manufacturing field.
