Abstract

Background: Food allergy is one of the most common health problems in children, with prevalence increasing annually. However, many parents often misinterpret their children's symptoms as food allergies, even though food may not necessarily be the cause. Given the rising incidence of food allergies and the misunderstanding among parents, this study aims to determine the prevalence of food allergies reported by parents in children aged 1 month–10 years at community health centers in Palembang. Methods: A descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted at Puskesmas Sekip Palembang and Puskesmas Alang-Alang Lebar from August 7 to October 25, 2024. A total of 108 respondents who met the inclusion criteria were selected using convenience sampling and completed a modified questionnaire from the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood. Data were analyzed using SPSS v27. Results: A total of 40 children (7.31%) out of 547 pediatric visits were reported to have food allergies. Symptoms involved various body systems, with the most common manifestations occurring in the skin (47.5%), primarily atopic dermatitis. Respiratory manifestations were reported in 22.5%, with wheezing as the dominant complaint, while gastrointestinal symptoms were noted in 15%, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The most frequently reported allergen was cow's milk, particularly in the 1–12 months age group. Conclusion: The prevalence of food allergies reported by parents in children aged 1 month–10 years at Puskesmas in Palembang was 7.31%, with the dominant symptoms being skin manifestations, followed by respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms.
