Abstract

Background: Down syndrome is a congenital disorder caused by abnormal number of chromosomes. Impaired craniofacial growth and development of patients with Down syndrome can affect the facial index’s patient. Facial index can also be influenced by several factors, one of which is race. Deutro Malay subrace is more spread in Palembang. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the differences of facial index between patients with Down Syndrome and non Down Syndrome in Deutro Malay subrace. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 68 subjects Deutro Malay subrace consisting of 34 patients with Down syndrome and 34 non Down Syndrome. All samples were aged 18 to 25 years and have never received orthodontic treatment. Measurement of facial index were made by using spreading calipers. Then facial index was classified by Martin and Saller classification. The data were analyzed using chi square test. Results: There was statistically significant differences of facial index between between patients with Down syndrome and non Down syndrome. Facial index most commonly found in patients with Down syndrome was euryprosopic (82.36%) and in non Down syndrome was mesoprosopic (38.23%). Chi-square test showed significant differences in facial index between patients with Down syndrome and non Down syndrome (P <0.05). Conclusion: There was difference in facial index between patients with Down Syndrome and non Down Syndrome in Deutro Malay subrace.
