Abstract

Air pollution is a serious problem globally, especially in urban areas where the transportation sector is one of the main contributors to sulfur dioxide (SO₂) emissions. Public filling stations (SPBU) that are the center of vehicle activity can produce SO₂ in ambient air that endangers lung function for individuals exposed in the long term, including workers and the surrounding community. This study aims to analyze the environmental health risks of SO₂ exposure to the lung function of workers and communities around gas stations in Ogan Ilir Regency. Measurements were taken at three gas stations using an Impinger Air Sampler and Digital Spirometer. The research method uses two methods, namely environmental health risk analysis (EHR) with a deterministic approach and environmental health epidemiology (EHR) with a cross-sectional approach. Sampling was carried out using the total sampling method on 62 officers and 16 members of the public with a total of 78 respondents.. The results showed an average SO₂ concentration of 32.6 µg/Nm³/hour, still below the safe threshold. Risk analysis showed a SO₂ intake value of 0.003 mg/kg/day and a Risk Quotient (RQ) < 1, so it was categorized as safe. However, lung function measurements showed that 93.6% of respondents had impaired lung function, while the other 6.4% had normal lung function. Anthropometric factors, exposure patterns, as well as smoking habits, medical history, and allergies did not show a significant relationship with lung function. It was concluded that although SO₂ concentrations are considered safe, pulmonary function impairment remains high, indicating the need for further research on other factors affecting lung health. These results provide input for better environmental management around gas stations.
