Abstract

Background: HIV and TB are a deadly combination, each accelerating the progression of the other. The lifetime risk of developing active TB in people with HIV may be 20 times higher than in people without HIV. Tuberculosis is an opportunistic infection and a leading cause of death in people with HIV and AIDS. Based on the background above, researchers are interested in conducting research on the Determinants of Tuberculosis Incidence in People with HIV in South Sumatra Province. Methods: This study is a quantitative study using a case control design. In this study, there were 222 samples, 74 cases and 148 controls obtained from the HIV AIDS Information System (SIHA) HIV program at the South Sumatra Provincial Health Office. Data analysis used Chi Square and Multiple Logistic Regression. Results: Shows that the incidence of Tuberculosis in People with HIV in South Sumatra is mostly male (81.1%), unmarried marital status (65.3%), low education (80.6%), Compliant in taking ARV drugs (71.2%), HIV Stage 1 and 2 (59%), No History of Tuberculosis Prevention Therapy (76.6%), Have a History of TB Screening (86%), Have a History of Opportunistic Infections (73%), and Suppressed Viral Load Results (82%). Variables related to Tuberculosis Incidence in People with HIV are HIV Stage Variable (P= <0.0001), History of Tuberculosis Prevention Therapy (P= <0.0001) and History of Opportunistic Infections (P= <0.0001). Then the dominant variable in influencing Tuberculosis Incidence in People with HIV is the variable History of Opportunistic Infections (P Value <0.0001; OR = 10.478; 95% CI = (4.470 – 24.561). Conclusion: History of Opportunistic Infections affects the incidence of Tuberculosis in People with HIV, Therefore additional interventions are needed such as TB screening and expanding the coverage of ART and Tuberculosis Prevention Therapy.
