Abstract

The return of the Taliban in August 2021 has significantly affected women's rights, their authority in education, employment, and involvement in community life. This situation is a significant reflection of the progress made in the previous decades. UN Women, as an international organization dedicated to gender equality, has played a key role in responding to this crisis. Using qualitative methodology and applying Clive Archer's theory of the role of international organizations, this study analyzes women's activism in Afghanistan, UN Women members, along with reports and documents and articles. The study investigates the strategies used by UN Women to navigate challenges such as limited access to Taliban-ruled areas. The study highlights important initiatives that have been implemented, including global advocacy for women's rights, providing humanitarian assistance, and supporting local women's movements, in addition to overcoming cultural barriers. UN Women has effectively maintained a global focus on women's rights in Afghanistan and has mobilized resources, its initiatives have faced obstacles due to geopolitical issues and the Taliban's highly restrictive policies. The results of this study, the instrument section contains three policies made by UN Women, namely the violence against women program, the women's empowerment program and the #unstoppable women movement. The UN Women Arena section provides a forum for discussion in helping women in Afghanistan. The Actor section, UN Women as an independent actor can handle issues without being affected by external support such as ensuring freedom from all forms of violence, maintaining the reproduction of health and mental health of women in Afghanistan.
