Abstract
Background: Candida albicans is a normal microorganism in the oral cavity that can transform into a pathogen caused various infections like oral candidiasis. Nystatin therapy in the long term has the potential to cause side effects. Garlic skin is a natural ingredient that contains active compounds, such as flavonoids, alkaloids, polyphenols, saponins, and quinones that can inhibit fungal growth, but it has not been widely studied and is still considered waste because its use is still limited. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of garlic skin extract in inhibiting the growth of C. albicans in vitro. Methods: This study was an in vitro laboratory experimental study with a post test only control group design. The test group used garlic skin extract with concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15% obtained through the maceration method using aquades solvent. Nystatin was used as a positive control and aquades as a negative control. The antifungal activity test of garlic skin extract against C. albicans was carried out using well diffusion method to determine the diameter of the inhibition zone. The results of the inhibition zone values were analyzed statistically using the Independent t-test. Results: No inhibition zone was formed in the garlic skin extract test group and the inhibition zone was only formed in the positive control (nystatin) with an average diameter of 14.02 mm. Conclusion: Garlic skin extract (Allium sativum) concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15% has no antifungal effect on the growth of Candida albicans fungus.
