Abstract

Background : The phenomenon of an increasing number of elderly people both globally and in Indonesia, this is characterized by an increase in the percentage of the elderly population in Indonesia exceeding 10 percent in 2020. This condition brings great challenges in the health sector, especially related to cardiovascular disease. The aging process causes a decline in heart function, which can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, reduce physical capacity, and reduce quality of life. One of the main mechanisms in cellular aging is chronic low-grade inflammation, where IL-6 plays an important role in the aging process, including aging of the heart. This study aims to assess the relationship between IL-6 levels with changes in diastolic function and Left Ventricular Mass Index (LVMI) in elderly patients undergoing treatment at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. Methods : This research used an analytical observational method with a cross-sectional design. The total sample consisted of 80 individuals who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data analysis included univariate analysis for frequency distribution, bivariate analysis to examine relationships between factors and the dependent variable, and multivariate analysis to observe final outcomes. Chi-square tests and logistic regression were used for statistical analysis. Results: This study involved 57 female subjects (71.3%) and 23 male subjects (28.7%). The mean age of the study subjects was 69.03 ± 5.44 years. Most of the subjects had an overweight body mass index (31.3%). The most common comorbidities were hypertension (73.8%), osteoporosis/osteoarthritis (65%), and dyslipidemia (58.8%). ACEi/ARBs were the most commonly consumed drugs (65%). Multivariate test using logistic regression found IL-6 had a significant effect on LVMI (p=0.021). Conclusion: There is an association between IL-6 and cardiac senescence performance in terms of cardiac hypertrophy assessed by LVMI. While in this study IL-6 did not have a significant relationship with diastolic dysfunction. Keywords: Elderly, inflammaging, diastolic dysfunction, LVMI, IL-6, cardiac senescence.
