Abstract

Medical waste management is a major challenge as the need for health services increases. Puskesmas Sembawa is one of the health service centres in Sembawa Sub-district that produces medical waste from its health service activities. This study aims to analyse solid medical waste management at Puskesmas Sembawa. The research design used a qualitative approach through observational methods. The source of information was obtained by purposive sampling method on 8 informants consisting of two key informants (Head of Puskesmas and Sanitarian), 4 main informants namely health workers from the waste generating room and 2 supporting informants namely cleaning service. The results showed that medical waste originated from medical actions, especially in the Emergency Room (ER), dental clinic room, pharmacy room to the laboratory room in the form of infectious waste, non-infectious waste, pathological waste, and pharmaceutical waste. Puskesmas Sembawa works with a third party for solid medical waste treatment because it does not have an incinerator. There are three types of containers/bags used to collect waste. Waste is transported using rusty trolleys without lids, and some waste treatment facilities are damaged. Temporary Storage Sites (TPS) have good flooring and ventilation but no temperature control. The conclusion of the study is that there are still discrepancies in some facilities and infrastructure, as well as the solid medical waste management process at the Sembawa Health Centre. The suggestion in the study is that Puskesmas Sembawa must immediately repair damaged facilities and complete deficiencies in facilities and infrastructure so that solid medical waste management at Puskesmas Sembawa can run smoothly.
