Abstract

Mangroves grow on the coasts of large islands to small islands with unique and different ecology and are known as a source of potential bioactive compounds. This study aims to determine the comparison of toxicity values and potential bioactive compounds of mangrove leaf extracts growing from the semi-closed areas of Payung Island and the Open Maspari Island on the coast of South Sumatra. Toxicity testing using A. salina shrimp larvae and A. aegypti mosquito larvae and identification of toxic bioactive compounds in the extracts were carried out through phytochemical tests, total phenols, and GC-MS analysis. The results of toxicity tests on A. salina shrimp larvae showed that mangrove leaf extracts from Payung Island were more toxic than those from Maspari Island. E. agallocha leaf extract has very strong toxicity properties with LC50 values of 54 µg/mL from Payung Island and 59 µg/mL from Maspari Island. The results of toxicity tests on A. aegypti mosquito larvae showed that all mangrove leaf extracts were non-toxic. Leaf extract of B. sexangula from Payung Island contains alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids and fatty acids. Leaf extract of E. agallocha from Payung Island and Maspari contains alkaloids, tannins, saponins, terpenoids, alcohol, glucose and fatty acids. Leaf extract of R. apiculata from Payung Island contains alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, steroids, alcohol, glucose and fatty acids. Meanwhile, leaf extract of R. stylosa from Maspari Island contains alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, terpenoids and fatty acids. The group of bioactive compounds found in the most toxic mangrove leaf extracts, namely from the species B. sexangula, E. agallocha, R. apiculata, and R. stylosa, have several biological potentials including as antioxidants, antibacterials, antivirals, antifungals, anti-inflammatory, antidiarrheals, antidiabetics, anticancer, antituberculosis, antiasthma, antiarthritis, antitumor and larvicide.
