Abstract
This study aims to understand the social construction of rural communities in viewing higher education for girls. In the midst of rapid development of access to education, there are still various views and obstacles that influence the decision of rural families in providing higher education to girls. The purpose of this study is to analyze and understand the phenomenon of rural communities in viewing higher education as important and unimportant. A qualitative approach with in- depth interview methods was used in this study to explore the views, expectations, and obstacles faced by rural communities. This study uses Peter L. Berger's theory of social reality construction. Data were obtained from 13 main informants and 1 supporting informant, through interviews, participant observation and documentation as well as data analysis techniques from Miles Huberman. The results of this study indicate that although there is awareness of the importance of higher education, traditional perceptions of gender roles are still significant factors in decision making. In addition, limited economic support, accessibility, and views on the domestic role of girls are the main obstacles identified. This study is expected to provide insight for the government and stakeholders in designing more inclusive policies and supporting access to higher education for women in rural areas.
