Abstract
The maternal mortality rate (MMR) in Indonesia in 2020 is still high compared to several other countries in Southeast Asia. Most maternal deaths are caused by complications during pregnancy and childbirth, which can be prevented or managed. This study aims to analyze the determinants of the incidence of pregnancy complications in Indonesia. This research is quantitative with a cross-sectional study design using secondary data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (IHS). The sampling technique was carried out by total sampling, with a total sample size of 50,221 respondents. Data were analyzed using the Complex Sample method. The results of bivariate analysis showed that maternal age (OR = 1.20; 95% CI = 1.09-1.33; p-value <0.001), maternal education (OR = 0.88; 95% CI = 0.80-0.97; p-value = 0.011), maternal occupation (OR = 0.88; 95% CI = 0.80-0.96; p-value = 0.007), maternal area of residence (OR = 0. 72; 95% CI = 0.65-0.79; p-value <0.001), multiple pregnancies (OR = 1.85; 95% CI = 1.21-2.83; p-value = 0.004), and ANC examination component (OR = 1.18; 95% CI = 1.07-1.30; p-value = 0.001) had a statistically significant association with the incidence of pregnancy complications. Multiple pregnancies was the most influential factor in the incidence of pregnancy complications (aOR = 1.83; 95% CI = 1.19-2.80; p-value = 0.005). Implementation of ANC according to the 10T standard needs to be strengthened through training of health workers, provision of medical facilities, and supervision of services. Education and improved access to health services are essential to prevent pregnancy complications. Pregnant women are advised to regularly perform ANC according to the latest regulations, maintain nutritional intake, and immediately report complaints to health workers.
