Abstract

Enterococcus faecalis is one of the dominant opportunistic bacteria often associated with etiological factors in human diseases, particularly in the oral cavity. The prevention of microorganism proliferation is essential to address failures in root canal treatments caused by Enterococcus faecalis. Beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) is known to contain antibacterial compounds such as flavonoids, which are proven effective in inhibiting bacterial growth and killing various bacterial species. Objective: To evaluate the antibacterial effect of beetroot extract against Enterococcus faecalis. Methods: This study employed an in vitro laboratory experimental design with a post-test-only control group approach. Beetroot extracts with concentrations of 12,500 μg/ml, 25,000 μg/ml, 50,000 μg/ml, and 100,000 μg/ml were tested. The negative control group used aquadest, while 2.5% NaOCl served as the positive control. The disc diffusion method was applied to assess the inhibition zone, followed by Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) tests using a colony count method. Data were analyzed using post hoc Mann-Whitney Results: Beetroot extract at concentrations of 12,500 μg/ml and 25,000 μg/ml (p<0.05) effectively inhibited the growth of Enterococcus faecalis. At a concentration of 50,000 μg/ml (p<0,5), the extract exhibited bactericidal activity against Enterococcus faecalis. Conclusion: The inhibition zone test indicated that beetroot extract demonstrated inhibitory effects against Enterococcus faecalis. The colony count results confirmed that beetroot extract exhibited bactericidal activity against Enterococcus faecalis.
