Abstract
In addition to providing facilities for lectures and learning activities, the campus also offers other facilities to meet the needs of the campus community, one of which is the cafeteria. Activities in the cafeteria inevitably produce grey water waste, which, if generated in large quantities, can have a negative impact on the environment. One alternative method to reduce pollution caused by grey water waste is the application of constructed wetlands. This study is an experiment involving laboratory tests to determine the effect of plant types on the reduction of pollutant levels in the wastewater from the Indralaya Engineering cafeteria using a constructed wetland of the free water surface type. The testing was conducted with the aid of sand and gravel media, as well as water jasmine plants (Hygrophila difformis) and canna plants (Canna indica). The initial parameters of the grey water from the Engineering cafeteria at the Indralaya campus included a BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) of 1,550 mg/L, a temperature of 29 °C, and a pH of 7.2. The efficiency of BOD reduction with the treatment using water jasmine plants resulted in a BOD reduction of 59.44% for the first trial, 70.24% for the second trial, and 62.14% for the third trial. Meanwhile, the treatment using canna plants achieved a BOD reduction of 45.95% for the first trial and 52.69% for both the second and third trials.
