Abstract

Sexual orientation in mass media has increasingly gained attention, particularly in the film industry, as a reflection of social diversity. Thor: Love and Thunder by Marvel Studios offers an inclusive narrative that explicitly and implicitly portrays non-heterosexual orientations through characters such as Korg and Valkyrie. This study aimed to analyze how LGBT sexual orientation was constructed in the film using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic approach, which encompasses the elements of representamen, object, and interpretant. The methodology employed was qualitative with a semiotic analysis, where every sign identified in the film—be it in dialogues, visuals, costumes, or narratives—was interpreted based on Peirce's concept of signs. The analysis focused on the depiction of same-sex relationships, the use of symbols like rainbows, and characterizations that transcend traditional gender norms. The results of this study revealed that Thor: Love and Thunder contained ten findings spread across six scenes, which constructed signs of LGBT sexual orientation. The conclusions indicated that LGBT sexual orientation in the film was represented through the use of icons, indices, and symbols. These interpretations were further supported by an in-depth analysis from the writer's perspective as a viewer. This research is expected to contribute to the field of communication studies, particularly in understanding how popular media can shape public perceptions and opinions on sensitive social issues.
