Abstract

The objective of this study is to reveal the impact of natural resource depletion, economic growth, and inequality in income distribution on CO2 emissions in Indonesia. The study used the time series data obtained from the World Bank for the period of 1990-2021. The application of the Auto-Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model was used to test the relationship among variables simultaneously in the short and long term and test the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis. The findings showed that depletion of natural resources, economic growth, and inequality in income distribution had a positive sign and a significant effect on CO2 emissions in both the short and long term. Likewise, strong evidence for the existence of an inverted U-shaped EKC was also applied in Indonesia. The implications of this study underscore the importance of Indonesia implementing comprehensive policies that pay attention to the relationships among economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social justice. Given the significant impacts of natural resource depletion, prioritizing sustainable resource management practices, such as forest conservation, responsible mining, and efficient resource utilization, is critical. Keywords: Resource Depletion, CO2 Emissions, Economic Growth, Inequality, EKC.
