Abstract

In Indonesia, rice is the main commodity that is widely cultivated by farmers. However, every year there is a decrease in rice production caused by various factors, one of which is the attack of brown spot disease, which is caused by the fungus Helminthosporium oryzae. Symptoms of this disease are the appearance of dark brown or reddish spots that are oval to round on the surface of the leaves. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Bacillus subtilis bacteria in inhibiting the development and growth of the pathogen H. oryzae. The research design used is a completely randomized design (CRD) with 6 treatments and 5 replicates. The treatments included the use of B. subtilis in the form of scratch (a), liquid Bacillus subtilis at a dose of 5 ml (b), 10 ml (c), 15 ml (d), as well as the fungicide Methyl Tiofanat (MT) (e), and control (f). This research was conducted at the Laboratory of the Food Plant Protection and Horticulture Center of South Sumatra Province. The results showed that B. subtilis isolate BG4 had an excellent ability to inhibit the growth of H. oryzae. Isolate BG4 showed the highest percentage of inhibition of 86.73% compared to other isolate treatments. This proves that B. subtilis BG4 is effective in controlling the pathogenic fungus H. oryzae then followed by other liquid isolates such as BSK3, BSK2, BSK1 that have a good ability to suppress pathogens. Fungicides experienced a decrease in the percentage of inhibition in suppressing the growth and development of pathogenic fungi of H. oryzae.
