Abstract

Rice is one of the staple food sources commonly consumed by people, especially in Indonesia. However, the damage to rice during storage caused by the post-harvest pest Tribolium castaneum has become a significant problem in Indonesia. The research problem in this study focuses on determining the dose of diatomaceous earth that achieves the highest mortality rate against T. castaneum and whether morphological changes occur in T. castaneum after the application of diatomaceous earth. The objectives of this study are to identify the dose that results in the highest mortality rate of T. castaneum due to diatomaceous earth application and to observe any morphological changes in T. castaneum after the treatment. This experiment was conducted from July to November 2024 at the Perum Bulog (National Logistics Agency) Regional Division of South Sumatra. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was used in this study, consisting of 5 treatments and 1 control group, each replicated 5 times. The doses of diatomaceous earth used were 0.5 g/100 g, 3 g/100 g, 4 g/100 g, 5 g/100 g, and 6 g/100 g, applied to 100 g of rice with 20 T. castaneum insects per treatment. Observations were conducted over 14 days, focusing on mortality rates and morphological changes in T. castaneum. The results showed that the mortality rate of T. castaneum increased daily. A dose of 0.5 g/100 g caused 66% mortality, while a dose of 3 g/100 g caused 99% mortality. Doses of 4 g/100 g, 5 g/100 g, and 6 g/100 g resulted in 100% mortality. The behavior of T. castaneum slow moved after the application of diatomaceous earth. The LD50 values observed on days 1 and 14 were 8.473 g/100 g and 0.541 g/100 g, respectively. Morphology change of T. castaneum after the application of diatomaceous earth included dryness or dehydration. Based on the results, it could be concluded that a dose of 3 g/100 g was the most effective for controlling T. castaneum. The LD50 value decreased over time. The application of diatomaceous earth caused a slowdown in the movement of T. castaneum and morphological changes, such as dryness or dehydration. The author recommended further studies to examine the morphological changes in T. castaneum in more detail using diatomaceous earth. The author suggested that future research should focus on the effectiveness of diatomaceous earth in controlling T. castaneum under various temperatures and humidity levels in storage rooms.
