Abstract

A research about "Analysis of Methyl Ester Additional Effect from Waste Cooking Oil (WCO) into Diesel Oil to Improve the Quality Of Biodiesel " has been done. Methyl ester was produced from an esterification reaction with montmorillonite carbon sulphonate as a catalyst at 80 °C for 2 hours. The identification of free fatty acids contained in the waste cooking oil was tested with GC-MS which indicated the main acid was Oleic acid (unsaturated fatty acids) with acid content of 43.51% at 42.302 and supported by test data with FT-IR showed presence of ester group at wavelength 1165.00 cm-1. To know the optimum condition of the mixture, the addition of methyl ester into the diesel oil with variation of B5, B10, B15 and B20 by comparison (v/v). Characterization used ASTM method (American Standard Test Methode). The parameters tested include water content, density, distillation, viscosity, colour, pour point and cetane index. The results showed that the fatty acid content in waste cooking oil averaged 36.94%, while the fatty acid content of methyl ester was 5.938%. The result of esterification conversion from waste cooking oil with montmorillonite carbon sulphonate catalyst gain 83.95% and it higher than the conversion using palm oil with catalyst TiO / montmorilonite as 74.02%. The optimum conditions of the mixture of methyl ester and diesel are found in the B20 mixture composition with water content (303ppm), density (0.8615 Kg / L), distillate volume (95mL), viscosity (4.613 cSt), pour point (2oC), color ( 1.5 scale of observation) and cetane index (51.2). B20 meets the specifications of all test parameters and has improved the quality of biodiesel oil.
