Abstract

Coffee is a major export commodity for Indonesia. However, coffee production is declining. The decline in coffee productivity and quality in smallholder plantations is largely caused by pest and disease attacks. This study aims to inventory and identify diseases that attack robusta coffee plants (Coffea canephora) in Lintang Kanan District, Empat Lawang Regency. The method used was field survey and random sampling of coffee plants diagonally at five points: one in the middle and four in the corner with a distance of 2 meters. Observations included disease severity and intensity. Environmental factors such as weather, humidity, rainfall, sunlight intensity, and wind direction can cause low coffee plant production and susceptibility to disease. In July 2024, rainfall ranged from 50-100 mm, so water availability was sufficient. However, in 2023, the low rain intensity caused the coffee plants to turn yellow and wilt. Observations were made of disease symptoms on coffee leaves, stems, and fruits. The results showed that the main diseases affecting robusta coffee plants in this area were leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix), leaf spot (Cercospora coffeicola), and upas fungus (Erythricium salmonicolor), all diseases with mild categories. These diseases cause significant losses in coffee production, with symptoms varying from yellow to brown spots on leaves, sudden wilting of twigs, and necrosis of infected plant parts. Environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and rainfall play an important role in the epidemiology of this disease. This research is expected to provide useful information for farmers in identifying and controlling diseases in robusta coffee plants, so as to increase productivity and crop quality.
