Abstract
Oil palm is one of the plantation crops that plays an important role in the plantation subsector and as a producer of vegetable oil, which has become a leading export commodity of Indonesia. However, oil palm cultivation is often affected by Oryctes rhinoceros pests, which disrupt plant growth and reduce yields. The use of synthetic chemical insecticides for control can have negative effects on non-target organisms and the environment. As an alternative, the bioinsecticide Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) can be considered for pest control. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of various Bt isolates that have undergone freeze-drying in controlling O. rhinoceros pests in oil palm plants. The research was conducted at the Phytopathology Laboratory and Greenhouse, Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, from September to November 2024. A Cluster Randomized Design (CRD) was used, with 6 treatments and 4 replicates, each containing 10 test insects. Thurex was used as a control. Experiments were conducted in a greenhouse, where Bt bioinsecticide with tapioca residue and palm kernel meal as carrier materials. Observations were made for 6 weeks to monitor the toxicity of Bt to O. rhinoceros larvae. The results showed that the use of tapioca residue and palm kernel meal as carrier material for Bt isolates had a positive effect on the infection rate and mortality of O. rhinoceros larvae. Isolate KJ3R5 showed the highest mortality rate of 100%, compared to the control treatment which produced 80% mortality rate on the 31st day of observation.
