Abstract

Background: Odontogenic tumors are heterogeneous lesions originating from remnants of tooth-forming elements such as epithelium, mesenchyme, or ectomesenchyme. Prevalence of odontogenic tumors is approximately 1% of all jaw tumors cases. Computed Tomography (CT) is used as and advanced diagnostic tool to assess lesions characteristics and cortical bone involvement through multiplanar imaging and 3D reconstruction. Studies regarding the prevalence of odontogenic tumors in Indonesia remains very limited emphasizing the need to provide an overview and information of the prevalence in Palembang. Objective: This study was aims to determine the prevalence of odontogenic tumors in the maxilla and mandible on CT scan examinations at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang from 2021 to 2023. Methods: This descriptive observational study conducted on 7-25 October 2024, at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Samples were taken using purposive sampling, totalling of 961 patient medical records. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2019. Results: Out of 961 medical records, 44 cases (4,57%) met the inclusion criteria for odontogenic tumors. The most common type was ameloblastoma, with 37 cases (84.09%). Odontogenic tumors were more frequently found in male patients (56.81%) than in females. The highest prevalence was observed in the 15–64-year age group (84.09%), with the mandible being the most common site (84.09%). Radiographic features often observed included multilocular lesions (65.90%), cortical expansion (97.72%), and cortical destruction (38.63%). Conclusion: The prevalence of odontogenic tumors at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang from January 2021 to December 2023, based on histopathological and CT findings, was 4.57%.
