Abstract
This study focuses on the use of impression management tactics in Newcastle United's Instagram captions as an effort to build a positive impression among supporters following the challenging acquisition by the Public Investment Fund (PIF). The acquisition marked a new era for Newcastle United after the unsuccessful leadership of Mike Ashley. The research employs corpus linguistics analysis as a method to process Instagram captions, which are subsequently analyzed and categorized based on Erving Goffman’s impression management tactics: ingratiation, self-promotion, exemplification, intimidation, and supplication. The findings highlight that self-promotion emerges as the most dominant tactic employed in crafting captions and constructing narratives by Newcastle United. This tactic significantly contributes to enhancing the club's positive image, establishing strong emotional connections with fans, and improving social media engagement. This study offers practical insights for sports organizations and other entities aiming to build their image through social media platforms, demonstrating the strategic value of well-executed digital communication.
