Abstract

Falciparum malaria is an infectious disease caused by Plasmodium falciparum and and a global threat for the inhabitants of the earth, especially in tropical country. Efforts for malaria control and prevention are inhibited by drug and insecticide resistance. Thus, the invention of antimalarial drug using traditional plant. Papaya?s leaf (Carica papaya. Linn) is one of the traditional medicine plant that used as antiplasmodium agent. Papaya?s leaf contains some chemical compound, such as alkaloid karpain, caricaksantin, violaksantin, papain, saponin, flavonoida, politenol, dan saponin, which is known as antimalaria and antibacterial agent. The aim of this study is to find out the role of extracted papaya?s leaf against P. falciparum strain 3D7. Papaya?s leaf was extracted using maceration technique using ethanol as solvent. Antiplasmodial activity assay was carried out by microscopically observing culture of P. falcifarum 3D7 strain and then the percentage of parasitemia, growth level and resistency was measured. The results show that the lowest growth percentage of P. falciparum strain 3D7 found in 100 ?g/ml concentration with average value 0,79% while the average value of resistency percentage is 74,14%. The strength activity of antiplasmodial of papaya ?s leaf extract (IC50) is 5,73 ?g/ml. Overall, ethanol extract of papaya?s leaf inhibited the growth of in vitro P. falciparum strain 3D7. Keywords: antiplasmodium, Carica papaya Linn, P. falciparum
