Abstract

Film is a communication medium that is quite popular among the public, apart from functioning as a medium of entertainment and education, film is also used to convey messages of social criticism. The film Dear Nathan: Thank You Salma carries a theme that contains a message of social criticism regarding the issue of sexual violence which is currently happening in the world of education in Indonesia. This research was conducted to find out how the message of social criticism is depicted in the film Dear Nathan: Thank You Salma. The analysis technique used is a descriptive technique, namely describing according to research data. The theory used is social criticism with Soerjono Soekanto's concept of social problems, using John Fiske's semiotic analysis technique which consists of the reality level, representation level and ideology level. The results of this research found that there were 7 scenes that contained messages of social criticism. Through John Fiske's semiotic model, social criticism in this film is depicted at the level of reality, the character shows that one of the figures who is the perpetrator of sexual harassment is known to have good manners and achievements, this does not guarantee having good morals. At the representation level, social criticism is shown using a medium shot camera technique with a high angle to depict the dominant upper class, apart from that, social criticism is also shown directly through sarcastic dialogue. At the ideological level, researchers found depictions of the struggles of victims of sexual violence. The social criticism depicted in this film includes criticism of morals, criticism of family disorganization, criticism of gender inequality, and criticism of politics.
