Abstract

The Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) is a crucial component in converting chemical energy into electrical energy in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC). One of the factors influencing the performance of MEA in PEMFCs is the type and loading of the catalyst used. This study evaluated the performance of a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) in a single-cell PEMFC using Pt/C catalysts with varying catalyst loadings. The MEA used in the study had dimensions of 2,5 × 2,5 cm and consisted of an anode and cathode electrode utilizing Pt/C as the catalyst, demonstrating good efficiency and durability across different catalyst loadings of 1; 2; 3; 4; and 5 mg/cm². The electrodes of the MEA were characterized to determine their morphology and thickness using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and their electrochemical properties using methods such as Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), and Linear Sweep Voltammetry (LSV). Additionally, the performance of the MEA was assessed through I-V and I-P curves with a hydrogen flow rate of 100 mL/min, providing information on the current density produced and the characteristics of the polarization curve. The results indicated that the MEA with a Pt/C catalyst loading of 2 mg/cm² exhibited the best performance based on electrode characterization and MEA performance tests. SEM-EDX morphological characterization of the electrodes revealed the following elemental composition is 83,50% carbon, 13,43% fluorine, 0,27% sulfur, and 2,81% platinum, with a thickness of 230,95 µm. Electrochemical property analysis showed that the electrode with a catalyst loading of 2 mg/cm² had an Electrochemical Surface Area (ECSA) of 10,022 m²/g, a conductivity of 12,06 × 10⁻² S/cm, and an electric charge of 0,021 C. The optimum performance of the MEA was observed from the I-V curve, where the current density increased from 0,8 mA/cm² to 137,6 mA/cm². From the I-P curve, the optimum power density was achieved at 30,112 mW/cm² with a current density of 67,2 mA/cm².
